Olney, MD�December 20, 2001�The Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), a non-profit organization that promotes the inherent rights, education and well-being of all children in homes, schools and communities, today issued the following statement in reaction to President Bush's comprehensive education plan:
The Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) congratulates President George W. Bush and the United States Congress for making education their top domestic priority and for allocating funds to close the student achievement gap.
As the “No Child Left Behind� education plan is about to be signed into law, it is imperative that we, as educators, respond to the mandates of the bill. While we do not fully support this legislation and its standardized test-based accountability, educators cannot afford to sit back and watch this plan unfold. It is our responsibility to simultaneously promote academic achievement in schools and to advocate positive changes in education to our local, state and national government. Parents and children can count on ACEI to continue to take the appropriate steps necessary to provide each individual with the highest quality education possible.
Educators have been charged with implementing this landmark piece of legislation, which President Bush promises “will ensure that no child in America is left behind through historic education reforms based on real accountability, unprecedented flexibility for states and school districts, greater local control, more options for parents, and more funding for what works.�
“We are dedicated professionals who work with children every day, and it is our responsibility to actively encourage teachers, parents, and children to participate in the implementation of this plan,� said Dr. Donald Murk, Chair of the ACEI Public Affairs Committee and an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at Messiah College, Grantham, Pennsylvania. “Just as accountability is one of the four basic principles in the President’s plan, ACEI will work to ensure that the President and Congress make good on their promises.�
